THE NAGANO/NIIGATA REGION

Both coastal and mountaneous cities, Nagano and Niigata are a taste of the countryside not too far from Tokyo. On the way to Nagano, explore Karuizawa, a luxurious hotspring resort. Further on, Nagano: made famous by the 1998 Winter Olympics, today it is a top spot for Buddhist pilgrimages and walks in the lovely Japanese Alps.

As for Niigata, this area is well-known throughout Japan for its local products. A modern city, it is also one of the most important fishing ports in Japan. This city is also the gateway to Sado Island, a special island where nature and hiking reign supreme.

Experience was generally good. \nI had difficulty finding the JR ticket counter at the Osaka station. . We also had difficulty arranging reservations to take trains from Tokyo to Nikko while still in Osaka and was told it was a JR East versus JR West issue.

The pass is excellent and a great value. I have only two suggestions. Make the pass scannable like the Suica cards at the turnstiles instead of having to manually show a person at the ticket booth.\n2: A map/directions should be provided on where to redeem your pass inside different stations
