How to Exchange Your Voucher for a Rail Pass

exchange orders

Once you’ve got your Japan Rail Pass Exchange Order in hand, there’s only one more step left! After arriving in Japan, you’ll need to turn in the exchange order (voucher) at the nearest Exchange Office. Here’s our step-by-step guide so that you’re extra prepared.

1. locate the nearest exchange office

Exchange your Japan Rail Pass
JR Pass Exchange Offices are located in most major train stations and airports (but not all, for example not in Chubu Airport in Nagoya).

Plan out ahead of time where and when you’ll exchange your pass using this official list of offices.

It’s important to note: Regional passes can only be exchanged at certain exchange offices within the region. Please check beforehand.

2. fill out the form

Once you reach the exchange office, there will be a brief form for you to fill out, with spaces to enter your name, passport number, and the date you want your rail pass to start (it doesn’t necessarily have to start the same day that you exchange it).

This form will be copied into your official rail pass.

3. get your rail pass and go!

Your rail pass is a green JR rail ticket pasted into a special folder, as pictured here. This is what you’ll need to show at the ticket gate to pass through to the trains, or at ticket offices to make seat reservations.
