The JR East-South Hokkaido Pass

regional jr passes

Starting on April 1, 2016, to celebrate and encourage use of the new Hokkaido Shinkansen, the JR East and JR Hokkaido are teaming up to release a brand new Japan Rail Pass!

This regional pass will allow you to travel in both eastern mainland Japan, using the JR East railways, and also southern Hokkaido, on the JR Hokkaido railways.

In Eastern Honshu, you can use this pass from both of Tokyo’s airports, Haneda and Narita, and you can even travel down to Otsuki Station, the closest JR Pass station to Mt. Fuji.
You can travel up north to Nikko, and even ride the shinkansen up to Sendai and Aomori. Use the brand new Hokkaido Shinkansen to travel up to Hakodate in Hokkaido, and then with the same pass take the JR lines (non-shinkansen, alas!) up to Sapporo.
This incredibly convenient pass is also a new “Flex” pass: Within a two-week period, choose any six days to use it. Look for this pass coming soon!

In the meantime, check out the other great regional passes you can use if you're passing through that area, such as the JR East Pass or the complete JR Hokkaido Pass.
